State Level training under National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme

Chandigarh, October 15, 2015: National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme (NIDDCP) : As per directions of Health Minister Sh Surjit Kumar Jiyani, a State Level training under National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme was held under chairpersonship of Smt Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary Health & Family Welfare, Punjab here today at Directorate of Health & Family Welfare, Punjab to sensitize about 21st October as "Global IDD Prevention Day`, to release the poster regarding the importance of iodized salt & ill effects of Iodine Deficiency  Disorders and to demonstratethe procedure of On Spot Salt Testing of Salt samples. Thetraining was attended by DistrictMass Media Officers & BEEs ofIDD (Iodine Deficiency Disorders) endemic district Amritsar, Tarn-Taran, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Patiala, SAS Nagar, Roop Nagar. Dr H S Bali, Director Family Welfare, Sh Jasvir Bains, Program Co-ordinator, Smt Jaswinder Kaur, Mass Media Officer, Dr S P Surila, President SNEHA (NGO)  &other officers were also present.
Sh Jasvir Bains said that NIDDCP is being effectively implemented in Punjab & a State IDD Cell & State IDD Lab has been established and is now fully functional. State specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been designed for salt & urine sample collection, transportation & testing in State IDD Lab, Chandigarh, which is first of its kind in India. He also made the participants aware about 20 questions booklet regarding importance of Iodized salt, IEC activities to be done upto block level on the occasion of 21st October as "Global IDD Prevention Day".  He demonstrated about the procedure of On spot Salt testing to be done by ASHA workers
Speaking on the occasion Dr Surila said that Iodine Deficiency Disorders are a worldwide major public health problem & more than 1.5 billion people all over the world are at risk of Iodine Deficiency Disorders. In 1962, Government of India launched National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Program. He added that Iodine Deficiency can lead to Goitre, Cretinism, Mental retardation, deafness, dwarfism and squint etc. He also told about the sources of Iodine.
Dr H S Bali, Director Family Welfare released the poster regarding 21st October "Global IDD Prevention day" so that field workers are sensitized about the importance of iodized salt & ill effects caused due to iodine deficiency. He appealed to all present that consistent efforts should be made to make common masses aware about the importance of iodized salt.
