Ludhiana, December 10, 2014: Dr Harpreet S Gill, Senior Consultant and head of Orthopaedics department at SPS Apollo Hospital, Ludhiana was invited speaker at the recently concluded ICJR-2014 (International Congress for Joint Reconstruction) at NCR- Delhi.
In his lecture, Dr Gill talked about the methods of minimising blood loss in knee replacement surgery and presented his method and research study of avoiding blood transfusions. Total knee replacement often requires blood transfusion, more so when bilateral surgery is performed. Many strategies are currently being employed to reduce the amount of blood transfusions, as there are chances of allergic reactions, disease transmission, injury to kidneys, lungs and moreover the costs involved in blood transfusions.  In a study conducted at the hospital enrolling 125 patients undergoing knee replacement surgery, only six required blood transfusions with the use of this method of applying Tranexamic acid during surgery. The study concluded that use of tranexamic acid is safe, effective, and reliable and a low cost measure to reduce blood transfusions.
The conference had participation of over 300 prominent Orthopaedic experts and international surgeons from the US, Europe, Australia and Asia who included Ross Crawford, Luca Marega, Alfred Tria, Fred Cushner and David Dalury besides Sylke Anderson, ICJR director. The idea behind the Congress was to provide a platform to address and discuss the recent advances and challenges in the field of Orthopaedic and joint replacement surgery.
