Jalandhar, October 20, 2018: KanyaMahaVidyalaya- the Heritage & Autonomous institution, Jalandhar organized a one day seminar on "Strategies for Solid Waste Management" under DBT Star College Scheme with an idea to create aware awareness among the students regarding the strategies and recent techniques employed for solid waste management. The seminar provided an opportunity to listen to eminent resource persons who are an authority in their field of specializations. Dr.B.S.Kaith, Professor, Department of Chemistry, NIT, Jalandhar delivered lecture on the topic `Scientific and technological applications of forest based solid materials’. He highlighted the cause of forest fires, need for forest fire management and how forest waste can be used. Dr. U.P.Singh, Director, CIPET, Amritsar delivered his talk on 'Plastic Waste Management'. He discussed various waste management strategies to reduce, reuse and recycle plastics. He also insisted on segregation of biodegradable and non- biodegradable wastes at home. Dr. Arvinder Kaur, Head, Department of Zoology, GNDU, Amritsar talked on the topic 'Vermicomposting: An ecofriendly approach for waste management'. She gave an insight on how kitchen waste can be converted into organic manure and also demonstrated the method of setting up a vermicomposting unit at small scale at home. Students were fascinated to see live worms and cocoons of Eisenia foetida, most common species used in vermicomposting. Principal Prof.(Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi appreciated the efforts taken by the Science faculty for conducting such a meaningful seminar and averred that such endeavours should be a regular feature in the college.
