Jalandhar, January 9, 2015: Taking the rising issue of drug addicts seriously, Punjab Technical University (PTU) has organised a one-day seminar on ‘Drug addiction and agricultural reforms in Punjab’, at its main campus, here today. It is jointly organised by PTU placement cell and NSS unit.
The keynote speaker for the occasion has been Sanjay Kumar, a renowned social activist from Bangalore, associated with Art of Living, the special speaker was Surinder Singh from Kehti Virasat mission, organic farming promoter organisation.
Numerous Panch and Sarpanch’s from the villages around university too joined the ceremony. More than 20 coordinators from affiliated colleges of PTU also joined.
Sanjay Kumar, the keynote speaker said, “Drug is the substitute of love. The time has already come when something should be done to take out youth from drug addiction so that they could contribute in building a stronger nation. Punjab, is said to be, the number one place as far as drug addicts are concerned. Around 75 percent of state’s youth is into drugs, either directly or indirectly. Drugs and eating habits have a stronger relation with each other. We should make youth realise about the significance of family, society, culture and teachers etc.”
urther suggesting the measures he said, “One of the best ways to make them realise about the life beyond drugs is spirituality. Awareness must be spread regarding the harmful effects of the drug addiction. Prohibition is not the solution, movement is. Government must pull up their socks now and run an effective campaign.”
While addressing the gathering Surinder Singh said, “In 1905, the British government sent a scientist to research on how they could develop the field of agriculture in India. After two years of working, he confirmed that there is no need to bring any development as Indian farming is already very much flourished. He even suggested that British must need the room for development in farming like India. Though in 1971, Punjab was under the threat of shortage of wheat but kudos to the spirit of Punjabi farmers that now we are the leading producers of major crops.”
He further stressed on, “The government shall take some fruitful measures in order to deal with key problems like suicide by farmers, loan debts, cancer issues, cost of production v/s cost of investment and few more.”
Sending his message through coordinator of the program, Dr. Rajneesh Arora, Vice-Chancellor, PTU said, “Such seminars will surely bring a ray of hope for farmers & youth. We should join our hands for drug-free state and I ensure that PTU will regularly support the farmers as well as youth in all aspects in coming time too.
