Ludhiana, August 26, 2015: Eminent experts from across the country deliberated on efficient use of water during the two-day “Regional Convention of Water Users Associations Presidents (WUAPs),” which concluded at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. Mr Nikhilesh Jha, Additional Secretary (Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Methods) and Director of National Water Mission (NWM) chaired the concluding session.

During the convention, the water experts said that water availability was limited and there was a dire need to reduce its demand through efficient use. The demand is expected to touch 1180 BCM (billion cubic meter) by 2050, they observed. “So, the major goal of NWM is to increase water use efficiency in all the sectors including irrigation, industry and domestic by 20 per cent. Besides, it aims at promoting basic level integrated water resources management,” added the experts. Keeping this in view, the Indian Network on Irrigation Participatory and Management organized “Regional Convention of WUAPs” in association with PAU, they said. The WAUPs spoke on the economical use of water. The main focus was on irrigation as it consumed nearly 83 per cent of the total water availability in the country. Besides, the water scientists of PAU discussed the methodology of conserving water, and enhancement of irrigation water use efficiency.
