Rare Challenging Transplant Case at Aykai Hospital
Ludhiana, April 4, 2019: Because of shortage of donor kidneys, marginal donors with anatomical abnormalities are being transplanted. In another rare challenging case, donor kidney having stone was operated laparoscopically, stone removed with ureteroscope on bench surgery, and then kidney successfully transplanted at Aykai Hospital,Chd Road Ludhiana by Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh ,renowned Transplant Surgeon and Urologist and his team. A 45 year old male was suffering from Chronic Renal Failure and was on regular Haemodialysis from last few years. He was evaluated for undergoing Kidney Transplant, prepared and made fit for surgery. Only suitable kidney donor found was his wife but she had stone in the kidney. Government authorization committee gave permission on the condition that surgeon Dr Aulakh will remove the stone before transplanting the kidney. The challenge before the surgical team was to remove the kidney stone and transplant it into the patient in the same sitting successfully without complications. The donor kidney was taken out by laparoscopic method whereby camera and instruments were used through small holes. After taking out the kidney, it was put in the ice slush and flexible urethroscope was used to take out the stone successfully within few minutes to keep cold ischemia time as minimum as possible. After that kidney was successfully transplanted. Immediately the kidney started working and pouring out urine. If stone would not have been removed, it could have caused lot of problem to the recipient. This is a very technically challenging surgery. After surgery patient had good post op phase and was discharged in a very good phase and with a very good normal working kidney. The team consisted of Dr JS Sandhu Nephrologist, Urologist Dr Anchal Kotwal and Anesthesiologist Dr Ankit Jain & Krishan Jain. Dr Navpreet Kaur Aulakh, Director Aykai hospital congratulated the staff and family of Transplant couple and promised to help needy patients in every possible way. Challenges ? Donor pool is small. ?
