Chandigarh, March 8, 2015: Continuing its spree to lead the country in almost every field, Punjab has now outnumbered the entire country in the fields of water supply coverage, water supply in litres per capita daily, hours of water daily, sewerage coverage and Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) capacity as per a World Bank report.
Under the pragmatic and result oriented policies of the SAD-BJP alliance and as a result of the firm commitment of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to provide the residents of urban areas with the state-of-the art civic amenities, the state has left behind the entire country in these key area. As per the statistics available from the World Bank report of 2014, Punjab has ensured 85% water supply coverage in the cities as compared to the national average of 54.7%. Pertinently as per the census of 2011 this data was 66% for the state and 62% for the country.
Likewise, the data pertaining to water supply in litres per capita daily reveals that Punjab was providing 200-260 LPCD as compared to the national average of 89.9 LPCD. In the same manner Punjab was providing 10-12 hours of water supply daily to its urban residents as compared to the national average of 4.3 hours. The figures of sewerage coverage in the cities reveal that Punjab was providing 65% covered sewerage facility to its resident whereas the figure at national level was 50.49%. STP capacity of state was also more than the national figure as Punjab was having 65% STP capacity against the national average of 58%.
Giving the credit of this stellar performance of state to the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Local Government Minister Anil Joshi, the Secretary Local Government Ashok Gupta said that the state government has made all out efforts to ensure that basic civic amenities were provided to the people in every nook and corner of the state. He said that the state government was making all out efforts to ensure that 100% target was achieved in water supply coverage, water supply in litres per capita daily, hours of water daily, sewerage coverage and STP capacity. “We are leaving no stone unturned for ensuring the urban populace gets all the ultra modern facilities at their disposals” added Gupta.
