PU research for replenishing treated tertiary water to Sukhna Lake

Chandigarh, October 15, 2016: The Microbiology Department of Panjab University (PU) has carried out a research project with Department of Environment, UT, Chandigarh. Dr.Naveen Gupta, Principal Investigator of this research project, with the guidance of Mr.Santosh Kumar, Director, Department of Environment, UT Chandigarh has devised a technology to render the treated tertiary water safe from eutrophication so that it can be added to Sukhna Lake. In a comparative study made, the treated tertiary water was found to be as good as Sukhna lake water itself with respect to chemicals, Biological Oxygen Demand,
Chemical Oxygen Demand, Density, Total suspended materials etc. The study assumes significance as Sukhna Lake water is receding and is a concern for everyone among the authorities and general public en large. High court had sought suggestions from the tricity residents and this research project findings was taken up in the wake of this call. The UT administration is planning to apply the findings of this project work on trial basis. If successful the problem of receding Sukhna water can be taken care of.
