Chandigarh, June 18, 2016: The ENACTUS SSBUICET team of Panjab University (PU) today launched an on-tap potable water filter “AMRITAM”. The PU Enactus team is a group of PU students working for upliftment of underprivileged communities.
PU Registrar Col.G.S.Chadha(Retd.) launched the filter, which has been developed by ENACTUS team using the latest technology. Faculty Advisor, ENACTUS and Coordinator, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, P.U. Prof. Seema Kapoor, PU Director Public Relations Mr Vineet Punia, Professor Anupama Sharma, Dr Suman Mor, Ms Sonia Sharma and the team of students, who developed the filter were also present on the occasion.
PU Registrar Col. G.S. Chadha (Retd.) asked the Enactus team to explore the possibilities of providing the filters to all needy people in PU adopted villages under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. He appreciated the efforts of the team in providing technologically advanced low cost water filter option for the poor people.
Prof. Seema Kapoor informed that the team of students has been working on the project for last six months and the filter would be available at very affordable cost. The team has tried to make it technological advanced as per the Government norms. The tests have been got conducted from Government approved labs and the results have been very encouraging. The cost too is very competitive & the Enactus will not be earning any profit out of it, being a non-profitable international organization, she added.
The filter effectively reduces certain organic compounds, chlorine, colour and odour causing compounds and also bacteria in drinking water. At a mere price of Rs. 200/-, it will act as a boon for the lower income group who can’t afford expensive RO filters. The team has identified 2 communities i.e. Transgenders and rehabilitated female sex workers (FSW’s) for the assembling and maintenance of these water filters, Prof. Seema Kapoor informed.
The Enactus team had earlier launched clay water filters under project “Amal-Vari” on the eve of World Environment Day, which became a huge success in and around the villages of Chandigarh. To improve the efficiency and to increase the target audience, Enactus team came out with a more compact design and efficient water filter “AMRITAM”.
The Enactus team had earlier bagged various grants & awards from ENACTUS India namely UNILEVER grant, Mahindra Rise grant and 1st prize of Rs. 1 lakh for Enactus Unilever Special Competition under the Unilever Sustainability Living Plan Criteria.
The team has also recieved a sponsorship of Rs. 10,000/- for testing and promotion of “AMRITAM” provided by The Rural Environmental Enterprises Development Society (The REEDS). The team has also thanked PU Administration including Dean Student Welfare Prof. Navdeep Goyal for the heart rendered moral and financial support to the team.
