Chandigarh, November 29, 2016: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh in association with Sarbat da Bhala Charitable trust today organized the book launch ceremony of “Batvara”, a biography of Dr.S.P.S.Oberoi, a philanthropist of international repute, authored by Dr.Sarbjinder Singh, published by Panjab University Chandigarh. Professor Kaptan Singh Solanki, Governor of Haryana, was the chief guest and the dignitaries gracing the function included Professor Arun. Kumar Grover, Vice Chancellor PU, Dr.Madan Lal Hasiza, Director education of the trust, Dr. Gurmohan Singh Walia, Vice Chancellor Shri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgar Sahib, Dr. Jaspal Singh, Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University Patiala, Padam Shri Dr. Surjit Patar,
eminent writer and poet, Professor Deepti Gupta, Dean International students, PU, Professor S.K. Chadha, Dr. Amandeep Singh Marwaha, Dr. Manjushri Sharma from the Central Placement Cell, PU, Chandigarh.
Professor Arun K. Grover welcomed the guests and shared the historical background of the genesis of Panjab University with the audience, set in the backdrop of partition. Dr. Madan Lal Hasiza then apprised the audience about the philanthropic
activities being supported by the trust, founded by Dr. S.P.S. Oberoi. He also gave a brief of vision and objectives of the trust that spans from setting up old age homes, organizing mass marriage functions, distributing sewing machines, providing
medical aid to needy patients, to supporting education of brilliant and needy students in various universities of North India.
Dr. Gurmohan Singh Walia highlighted the importance of giving back to society, in any form possible by an individual. He also appreciated the relevance of the theme of the book, ‘Partition’, to be launched. Dr. Jaspal Singh captured the audience’s
attention with his recital of quotes and poetry of famed litterateurs.
The function at Golden Jubilee Hall witnessed a rich literary and historical address by the Governor, who was able to bring home the message of selfless service for others, through references to events penned down in the sacred book, Gita. The
ceremony concluded with distribution of scholarships to the deserving students of Panjab University. The Sarbat da Bhala trust presented a cheque of Rs. 3,45,592 (Three lakh forty five thousand and five hundred and ninety two ) to the Central
Placement Cell, Panjab University for 69 applicants to pay the 2nd instalment of fees under this scholarship scheme from the Economically weaker section, Differently abled, Students/families affected by natural disaster and a student who has lost
his/her father.
