Ludhiana, April 22, 2016: Ms Karminderbir Kaur, a Ph.D.student of the School of Agricultural Biotechnology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has been awarded the prestigious “Monsanto Beachell-Borlaug International Scholarship.” Out of 41 applicants worldwide, she is among the eight students selected for the scholarship. The total cost of the scholarship for three years is USD 111028; it includes stipend, tuition fees, international travel, as well as funds for research. It is worthwhile to mention here that Karminderbir is the sixth Beachel Borlaugh scholar from PAU.
Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU; Dr Neelam Grewal, Dean, Postgraduate Studies; Dr H.S. Dhaliwal, Dean, College of Agriculture and Dr R.K. Gumber, Director, School of Agricultural Biotechnology congratulated the PAU student for successfully competing for this global scholarship programme.
This scholarship provides an opportunity to highly motivated students worldwide, seeking their Ph.D. in rice or wheat breeding, genetics and biotechnology. Through these fellowships, the scholars gain the leadership skills, education and tools to positively impact rice and wheat farmers around the world and improve the future of agriculture.
Giving details of the scholarship, her mentor Dr Kuldeep Singh, Senior Molecular Geneticist, said Karminderbir will work for one year at the University of California, Davis, USA with Dr Luca Comai and Dr Anne Britt. Her research project aims at developing an in vivo haploid induction system in rice using the most recent technology of Genome Editing. During the scholarship period, she will have an opportunity to meet and interact with World Food Prize Laureates in USA.
