Ludhiana, November 30, 2016: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has inked a pact with the Khalsa College, Amritsar, for berseem seed production. Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, and Dr Mehal Singh, Principal, Khalsa College, Amritsar, signed the memorandum of understanding on behalf of their respective institutions. As per the memorandum, good quality of berseem seed of improved varieties of PAU will be produced at the agricultural farm of the Khalsa College, Amritsar and will further be distributed to the dairy farmers, who are facing shortage of good quality berseem seed.

Dr Dhillon said, “The supply of good quality fodder seed is a key factor for boosting the dairy farming. Among rabi fodder, berseem is an important fodder crop.” In Punjab, berseem is being cultivated on an area of about 2.26 lakh hectares and timely supply of good quality, disease free seed is a challenge, he observed. This agreement would go a long way in providing good quality berseem seed to the dairy farmers, he added.

Dr R.K. Gumber, Director of Research and Dr Tarsem Singh Dhillon, Director (Seeds), PAU, were also present on the occasion.
