Ludhiana, November 3, 2015: According to Punjab Agricultural University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Samrala), paddy crop, this year in the district, is expected to show good results in terms of yield.

Giving details, Dr S.C.Sharma, Associate Director, KVK Samrala, said the teams of KVK scientists are visiting Mandis regularly. “As per the recent survey conducted by the experts, PAU developed varieties namely PR 121, PR 122 and PR 123 have shown excellent results in the fields,” he told. “These varieties have given more than 30 quintals of yield,” he highlighted. Dr Sharma attributed the success to Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, under whose stewardship, a seed shop was opened at KVK Samrala in 2013. “The number of farmers, purchasing the seeds, is escalating day by day,” he said.

Dr Devinder Tiwari, a KVK expert, said, “During Kharif season, farmers were supplied nearly 500 quintals of seed at KVK Samrala.” Seeing the success of PR 121 and PR 122 in the fields, the demand for seeds is going to touch 600-700 quintals, he observed.

A farmer from Shamgarh, Amandeep Singh, while sharing his experience, said this year, he brought 15 acres of his land under PR 122 paddy variety, which he purchased from KVK Samrala. The variety gave an average yield of 33.5 q, he added.

Another farmer from the village Diwala, Sukhjit Singh said that 90 per cent of farmers in his village prefer PR 121 variety for it gives more yield and matures early. Besides, PAU developed paddy varieties are resistant to various diseases, he said.
