Ludhiana, October 28, 2015: To control Karnal bunt disease in wheat, Dr P.S.Sekhon, Head, Department of Plant Pathology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has appealed to the farmers to go for seed treatment before sowing the crop. He said that during February- March 2015, the Karnal bunt disease attacked the wheat crop due to fluctuating weather conditions. This disease spreads through contaminated seed, he said, while emphasizing on using disease free seed. “For seed treatment, wash the wheat seed samples in water for few minutes and then spread the seeds on plain white paper. In case, Karnal bunt disease is noticed on 4-5 seeds (may be half percent), do not use these,” he advised. Dr Sekhon further suggested, “Before sowing, treat the seed with Seedex 2DS @ 40g or Vitavax Power @120 g or Vitavax @80 g per 40 kg seed.”
