Ludhiana, May 30, 2016: A training programme on “Recent advances to be disseminated to farmers in allied sectors” was organised by the Punjab Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (PAMETI), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). As many as 32 extension officers of state allied departments and field staff of ATMA participated in the training programme.
Dr H.S. Dhaliwal, Director, PAMETI, said “In Punjab, farmers are slowly moving towards enterprises belonging to allied sectors of agriculture. These enterprises include commercial dairy farming, fisheries, piggery, goatry, horticulture, agro-forestry etc.”If farmers use appropriate technologies and follow prescribed management practices, they can have remunerative returns from these enterprises, he added. More focused and effective extension services are required for achieving this objective, he said.
During the programme, various experts from PAU and GADVASU belonging to diverse fields interacted with the participants and discussed the future prospects of different enterprises. An effort was made to motivate the participants to work in collaboration and coordination for the welfare of the farmers.
A one-day exposure visit to farmers’ fields venturing into agro-forestry, dairy and floriculture was also organized where participants interacted with the first generation agri-entrepreneurs. This will help participants in communicating latest novel techniques of production and marketing with the farmers and getting their feedback.
