Ivy Hospital has introduced a German knee joint system recently
KHANNA: Dr Vikas Mehra, Director & Head of Department of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement said that this new joint has been made keeping in mind the smaller knee size of Indian population as compared to their counterparts in western countries. It is a bone preserving joint which matches Indian knees with more accuracy.

The recovery period is far better in new joint besides the patient get rid of pain in three-four days time. Post knee surgery, the patient feel comfortable. They can do routine activities hassle free and are also in a position to climb stairs within three weeks, asserted Dr Mehra.

The major difference between this new joint and old one is the golden colour titanium niobium nitride (TiNbN) coating on the metal that check any kind of allergy to patient. In fact this new joint is a solutions for allergic reactions and a virtual ‘golden days” for patients who are sensitive to metal with joint prostheses and hypoallergenic surface modification The success rate of the newly introduced is 99 percent, maintained Dr Mehra.

The hypoallergenic TiNbN surface modification in new joint is the ideal solution for patients with a suspected metal hypersensitivity., Prof Aare Martson Head of Clinic , Department of Traumatology and Orthopaedics , University of Tartu , Estonia .

“The new joint is a TiNbN hard surface modification which has been in use in Europe for over ten years to offer protection against wear and allergies in orthopedic applications. PorEx surface modification only contains the hypoallergenic elements titanium and niobium, and no chrome or nickel.”

Interestingly an 80-yr old patient was implanted this new knee joint during a live surgery at Ivy Hospital, Mohali yesterday by Dr Mehra and Prof Martson . The patient will be discharged from hospital in three-four days time.
