Modi promises to look at Teesta accord with Bangladesh

New Delhi, May 27 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday pressed for border management with Bangladesh and hinted that India was not averse to holding talks with the neighbouring country over the Teesta water sharing agreement.

"The issue of Teesta came up during talks between Modi and Bangladesh Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury," Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh told media persons here after the meeting held at Hyderabad House here.

Asked what was Modi's view over Teesta, she said: "Prime Minister Modi said we will see how we can look at it."

Asked whether Modi took up the issue of Bangladeshi infiltration, she said a "broad gamut of issues", including border management, were discussed.

India and Bangladesh pledged for more "people-to-people contact" and improving cooperation in areas such as power, road and transport, the foreign secretary added.

Chaudhury, who represented Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Haseena at Modi's swearing-in ceremony Monday, extended her invitation to the Indian prime minister to visit Bangladesh.

Sujatha Singh said Modi accepted the invitation.
