Mission Tandrust Punjab: Councillor Mamta Ashu distributes carry bags made of jute & cloth to city residents
Ludhiana, September 14, 2019: MC Councillor Mamta Ashu today said that under the Mission Tandrust Punjab of the state government, the Municipal Corporation Ludhiana is committed for making Ludhiana city plastic free. She said that the MC is formulating a proposal to ensure that the use of plastic is decreased. Accompanied by senior MC officials, Mamta Ashu today visited the sabzi Mandi near Lodhi Club and distributed carry bags made of jute and cloth totally free of cost to the city residents. She informed that an NGO named “Women Next Door” has provided 2000 such carry bags to the MC, which would be distributed free of cost to the city residents. Mamta Ashu said that as per Subsection 2 of Section 7 of the Punjab Plastic Carry Bags (Manufacture, Usage and Disposal) Control Act, 2005, the state government has already completely prohibited manufacturing, stocking, distribution, recycling, sale and use of plastic carry bags in the in the state. She also interacted with the residents and urged them to shun use of plastic in all forms. She also sought feedback from the shopkeepers about the use of plastic carry bags. Mamta Ashu urged the city residents to not use polythene (plastic) based carry bags and instead use jute or cloth based bags as it would help in saving our environment. She called upon other NGOs and social organisations to come forward and distribute such carry bags amongst our city residents, so that no one uses plastic carry bags. She informed that more such events would be organised in other parts of the city as well, till it becomes a mass movement. The MC officials also confiscated polythene based carry bags from the spot.
