Maharashtra takes giant leap in Green Buildings: IGBC

Mumbai, October 5, 2016: Maharashtra continues to be the torch-bearer for green and healthier India with altogether 1,124 green buildings registered with Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). The significant contribution by the state take India’s registered green building foot-print to 3.86 billion square feet, the second best globally after the United States.

The recent data on state-wise green buildings released by IGBC, part of CII, shows that Maharashtra is followed by Tamil Nadu (355), Karnataka (354), Uttar Pradesh (351), Telangana (253), Delhi (197) and Haryana (194).

With the 4.85 billion square feet of green building foot-print across the country, India has managed CO2 reduction by 50 Million Tons, ensured energy saving worth 50,000 Giga Watt/Hours and water savings to 170 Giga Litres.

IGBC has set up an ambitious target to facilitate 10 billion sq. ft. of registered green building footprint by 2022.

To realise its target of expanding green buildings foot-print in India, IGBC, during the 14th edition of Green Building Congress 2016 on 5-8 October 2016 in Hotel Grand Hyatt, Santacruz (East) Mumbai, will be adding 6 more rating systems, which will have specific IGBC green building guidelines for every type of building, as well as infrastructure project in the country. These include IGBC EB rating, which facilitates conversion of existing building into green building. Presently there are 14 IGBC green building rating systems.

During the Green Building Congress beginning tomorrow (October 6, 2016) Dr Mangu Singh, Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation; Ar. Tai Lee Siang, Chair, World Green Building Council; Dr Prem C Jain, Chairman, Indian Green Building Council; Mr Gurmit Singh Arora, Co-Chair, IGBC Mumbai Chapter; Mr Arun Bhatia, Chairman – IGBC Delhi Chapter & Managing Director – India Region – UTC will address at the programme and also present APN Awards. This would be followed by a presentation by Mr. Mansoor Khan, Author & Film Maker.

Wg Cdr (Retd) Rakesh Sharma, India's first Cosmonaut and Dr Felix Padel Darwin, Great-great grandson of Charles Darwin will also be attending the Green Building Congress event.

Over the years, Green Building Congress has played a catalytic role in advancing green building movement in the Country and will continue to play a more important role in consolidating India’s leadership position in the global green buildings map.

IGBC currently has 21 local chapters spread all across the country dedicating their effort in promoting the green building movement in their region.
