Jalandhar, May 2, 2014: The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee conferred the prestigious PVSM on Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra, PVSM,AVSM,VSM, General Officer Commanding –in- Chief, Northern Command for exceptional service and outstanding leadership in a glittering Defence Investiture ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi on Friday.
A professional Soldier with sterling leadership qualities, Gen Chachra took over reins of the Operationally active Northern Command on 01 Jul 2013 and conceptualized a realistic, practical and dynamic joint strategy in conjunction with the Civil administration, State police and CAPFs to combat terrorism in the state of J&K.
As a result of excellent synergy between the Indian Army, Civil administration, other Security and intelligence agencies, militants attempting to infiltrate have been systematically targeted and their
leadership eliminated in hinterland in a series of successful operations in the last 6 months leaving most of the terrorist tanzeems in disarray and reduction in violence levels . There is also relative calm along the LOC and LAC with reduced Cease Fire Violations.
During his command of the Northern Army, there has been a significant improvement in the development of infrastructure for Serving Soldiers deployed in extremely challenging and inhospitable terrain and initiation of a number of initiatives for the welfare of Veterans (Ex-Servicemen), Veer Naris and their dependants.
As part of Indian Army’s participative contribution, the General Officer has been instrumental in the initiation of a number of developmental initiatives for welfare of the people of J&k , truly reflecting his genuine love and concern for them. “Imdad”, humanitarian assistance to the people living in remote mountainous regions in harsh climatic and topographical conditions without clearances was launched as a part of this initiative.
A strong Votary of Zero tolerance towards human rights violations, Gen Chachra has directed commanders at all levels to ensure that troops maintain highest standards of professionalism by showing fullest restraint and conduct people friendly operations with no collateral damage and inconvenience to the local population.
Under Gen Chachra’s leadership , a safe winter and a vibrant transition to a summer of hope in 2014 has been ensured. The award of prestigious PVSM by The President of India is an apt recognition of the valiant efforts of the troops in Northern Command led by their illustrious Army Commander.
