Ludhiana, October 7, 2016: A lecture on ‘urinary problems, protection of kidneys and organ donation for Transplant’ was delivered recently by Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh (Professor of Urology & Head, Transplant Unit). The lecture was organised by Punjab Agricultural University for Faculty, Farmers and members of Kisan club. Dr T S Riar, Programme Co-ordinator, Directorate of Extension Education welcomed and introduced Dr Aulakh to the audience.
In his lecture, Dr Aulakh discussed various urinary problems like blood in urine, pus in kidney , stone problems, prostate diseases , sugar and high blood pressure . he also informed about causes of kidney failure and need of transplantation. Various daily routine practices which can protect kidneys are:
• Eat healthier foods.
• Limit salt and caffeine.
• Set aside time to relax.
• Exercise regularly
• Reduce the amount of sugar and fat in your diet.
• Quit smoking
• Keep regular control of your blood sugar level
• Monitor your blood pressure
• Maintain a healthy fluid intake
Dr Aulakh told us about signs for kidney damage and timely consultation to urologist:
• Burning sensation while urinating
• Bed wetting
• Blood/pus in urine
• Night frequency
• Generalised weakness
• Low HB
• Bony pains in male
• Decreased urine output
DR Aulakh also explained that neglected symptoms of prostate which can be either due to BPH(Benign Prostate Hyperplasia) or prostate cancer can lead to permanent damage to our kidneys.
He also explained that about 2-5% of total Kidney Transplant done by him are the patients who didn’t get timely consultation for kidney stones.
Further on account of knowledge on kidney he encouraged for organ donation, he explained “Approximately 150,000 people develop end-stage kidney failure every year in India, but only three per cent have a transplant .A long list of patients are awaiting transplant in the country due to acute shortage of supply of organs. If a person pledges to donate his/her organs after death he/she can give life to 8 more persons, meaning he/she would be alive even after death. So don’t take your organs to heaven, for heaven knows, they are needed here !! Inspired by the speech given by DrAulakh, the audience raised their hands to fill the donar cards and pledge for organ donation.
