Ludhiana, June 2, 2016: A lecture was organised today by Department of Endocrinology on ‘Diabetic Kidney Disease’.
Dr Micheal Cummings from University of Portsmouth, UK delivered a talk on ‘Diabetic Kidney Disease’ Speaking on the occasion, Dr Micheal said that kidney disease in diabetic patients can pose a great threat to the normal functioning of their heart. Good blood sugar control is important to prevent the onset of kidney disease. He strongly emphasized that blood pressure and cholesterol should be effectively controlled. The detection of Diabetic Kidney Disease is very easy and can be simply done by getting sample of urine for ‘Microalbumin testing.’
Dr Cummings furthers said that Diabetic Kidney disease passes through different stages which can be detected clinically very easily. It passes through Microproteinuria, Macro and finally resulting in End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). End stage Renal Disease normally develops withing ten to fifteen yearsof uncontrolled diabetes. Treatment of End Stage Renal Disease involves either undergoing dialysis for lifetime or a kidney transplant operation.
Dr Parminder Singh, Head of Diabetes and Endocrinology, told the audience that three out of thousand diabetic patients suffer from End Stage Renal Disease. Studies have shown that two out of three patients suffering from Type 2 Diabetes are at a much higher risk of developing Diabetic Nephropathy. When Diabetic Nephropathy sets in, it not only increases the chance of getting to End Stage Renal Disease but it increases the risk of heart diseases and ultimately, death.
Dr JS Sandhu, Professor & Head of Nephrology said that patients should be properly educated to understand the complications of diabetes well. Principal Dr SandeepPuri and Dr.Dinesh Gupta (Prof& Head of Medicine) proposed a vote of thanks to the guest speaker.
