Kenyans urged to watch World Cup at home

Nairobi, June 21 (IANS/EFE) The Kenyan government has urged its citizens to watch the FIFA World Cup at home and to avoid crowded cafes and restaurants for security reasons.

"Where possible, Kenyans are strongly advised to watch the World Cup matches from the comfort of their homes instead of crowded and unprotected open places," the interior ministry said in a statement, reports EFE.

The statement came five days after two terrorist attacks left 60 people dead. Although the attacks were claimed by Somalia's Al-Qaeda-linked Shabab, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has blamed the carnage on "local political networks".

"Although the government has beefed up security in all parts of the country, bar and restaurant owners are at the same time notified to maintain high alert in their areas of operation," added the statement.

Shabab militants killed at least 76 people by bombing two restaurants in the Ugandan capital four years ago.
