Chandigarh, November 12, 2016: The Intra Moot Court Competition, 2016 witnessed exceptional qualities of the legal profession. One could witness budding lawyers arguing on a given proposition focusing mainly on contract laws and criminal laws. The teams were allotted a moot proposition and the participants were required to submit a memorial citing various case laws and prayer which they seek from the Hon’ble bench. The participants were expected to exhibit their presence of mind, organization, style, poise, courtesy and demeanor which would aid them to articulate and adept at public speaking and analytical skills.
Around 100 teams elevated the event with their enthusiasm and energy. The preliminary rounds were held on November 10, 2016. The results of the preliminary rounds were announced on November 11, 2016 where 8 teams among the participating teams qualified for the quarter final rounds. The semi-final and the final rounds were held on the concluding day. After a lot of grub work of 3 days, they have received a successful outcome. The team of 3rd year students, Meher Nagpal, Sadhvi Chopra and Harnoorpreet Kaur emerged as masters of the proposition focusing on Contract law. The team comprising Ramita, Apurva and Jahanvi managed to win the final rounds after successfully defending their case, better than the opponents could do and won the winners’ trophy on the proposition challenging the Criminal Law. These are the students who made every effort to strive for the best. Prizes for the best memorial and best speakers were given.
Taking part in moots helps them in developing fluency and clear enunciation and also gives one experience in the art of persuasion and of putting a case succinctly and intelligibly. Mooting not only gives one practice in court procedure but also helps to develop the aplomb that every advocate should possess. Office-bearers of the Moot Court Society, Lakshita Sahni, Anirudh Bhatia and Anirudh Nanda under the guidance of Dr. Jaimala and Dr. Sabina Salim assisted by around 250 volunteers have been working tirelessly for organizing the competition.
The competition was adjudged by a panel of UILS’ alumni and learned advocates from the District Court as well as the Panjab & Haryana High Court. The semi-final rounds of the competition witnessed senior advocates with an experience
of 15-20 years which they readily shared with the students. The final rounds were judged by Justice Jaishree Thakur, Justice Haripal Verma (Punjab and Haryana High Court) and Ms. Anu Chatrath, Dean Law Faculty. The judges said that these
competitions give real life training to budding lawyers as they stimulate real life court room situations.
The Director of UILS, Professor Sangita Bhalla congratulated the winners and the participants of various events and encouraged the teacher coordinators, faculty members, administrative staff and the students for putting forth their tremendous efforts in making the event a grand success.
