Interstate Green Corridor created to transfer heart from Mumbai to Chennai to save 61 year old Man from Lebanon

Chennai, October 13, 2017: An interstate green corridor was created from Mumbai to Chennai to transport a live heart for transplant at Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai. The 61 year old recipient from Lebanon, who has been waiting for a month in organ waitlist, was suffering from Cardiomyopathy that required an urgent heart transplant. The team of doctors, that performed a successful transplant surgery, was led by Dr K R Balakrishnan, Director, Cardiac Sciences and Dr Suresh Rao, Head of Department of Cardiac Anesthesia and Cardiac Critical Care at Fortis Malar Hospital, Chennai.

The harvested heart was retrieved at 12:30 PM in Mumbai. A green corridor was created to cover a distance of 35 kilometers within 40 minutes during peak traffic hours from Apollo Hospital in Nerul to airport in Mumbai. The heart was then flown in a flight to Chennai at 04:05 PM and reached Fortis Malar at 4:36 PM. Another intercity corridor was created to transport the harvested heart from the Chennai airport to Fortis Malar Hospital in Adyar in 26 minutes to cover a distance of 12 kilometers.

The heart became available when kin of Chetan Tailor, shopkeeper decided to donate his organs. When the 43 years old Chetan was admitted in Apollo Hospital, he was diagnosed to have bleeding in the brain stem. On Thursday, the patient was then declared brain dead. The heart was a match for the 61 year old patient at Fortis Malar.
