Chandigarh, January 11, 2015: The Education Department today organised a special statewide meeting with Assistant Education Officers (Sports) to launch an exclusive anti-drug awareness campaign amongst students in general and sportsmen in particular by dispensing education against harmful effects of drugs.
Presiding over the meeting Education Minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema directed all AEO sports to intensify the steps being taken to make aware the students about adverse effects of drugs by encouraging them towards sports, according to the Punjab’s latest breaking and top news at this moment.
Olympian and Hockey Icon MLA Pargat Singh was the special attraction of the meeting here at Sikhea Bhawan, Mohali, who chaired the special session against the negative impacts of drugs. He assured to extend fulsome cooperation, support and assistance from sports fraternity of state to make aware students and sportspersons about the drugs and their negative effects.  He asked all District Education and Sports Officers to divide the sports in three categories namely Simple, Specialist and Super Specialist besides launching a campaign to motivate students for simple sports at initial level. He said Sports officers should form district level committees with the active participation of former Olympians, International sportspersons so that adequate steps could be taken.
Focusing on sports reforms in education, Pargat Singh gave a clarion call to Physical Education Teachers to come forward to save the budding future of the nation. He said Sports activities could change the fate of the nation by channelising the energy of our budding sportsmen. He asked Sports Officers of education department to take sports at primary level to infuse sports spirit amongst students of elementary schools. He said sports activities could play a pivotal role to purge the menace of drugs from society. He said DPE and PTIs of government schools should run the sports centers in their own respective schools and this exercise will prepare 4 lakh budding sports students. He said China had adopted this policy and now it has become super sports power.
Meanwhile addressing the session Dr. Cheema said every child should be engaged in sports activities from the primary level so that healthy society could be formed.   
Deputy Director (sports) Sarbjit Singh Toor thanked to Olympian Pargat Singh for extending cooperation and guidance to education department. Raghbir Singh, Dr. Gian Singh and Assistant Education Officers (Sports) were also present in the meeting.
