Himachal CM inaugurates products exhibition of Jail inmates

Shimla, March 31, 2017: Chief Minister Shri Virbhadra Singh today inaugurated an exhibition organized by the State Prisons department in Gaiety Theater, showcasing the products prepared by the Jail inmates from all over the State.

The three day exhibition will be open to public to purchase the products like shawls, stoles, muffler, blankets, woolens jackets and handloom & handicraft products including furniture made by the inmates.

The Chief Minster on this occasion said that prisons can be made meaningful by giving inmates a chance to make such products which are artistic, valued and commercially viable. He said The State Government has initiated many welfare schemes for the inmates of prisons so as to make them financially independent. Skills learnt in the prison will help in rehabilitation of these inmates when released from prison. The skills learnt will bring a sense of confidence, and also increase their income, said the Chief Minster.

He said that such activities keep them busy and provides a corrective approach to the psyche of these persons. It will help in developing a responsive and respectful attitude of these persons towards society.

Director General of Prisons, Shri Somesh Goyal briefed the Chief Minister about other activities undertaken by Jail inmates including music and writing. He said that the Prisons department had opened sale counters at Shimla, Nahan, Solan and other places for sale of the products prepared by inmates.
