Ludhiana, October 19, 2014: Senior Akali leader and former MP Gurcharan Singh Galib (82) was cremated with full state honours at his ancestral village Galib Kalan of Ludhiana district today. Cabinet Minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon and thousands of people from all walks of life had gathered at village Galib Kalan to bid adieu to Gurcharan Singh Galib, who passed away after brief illness at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, here yesterday.
Deputy Commissioner Rajat Aggarwal laid floral wreath on behalf of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. A contingent of Punjab Police reversed their arms and fired shots in the air as a mark of respect to 82-year-old leader.
The pyre was lit by Galib's son Karanjit Singh Galib in the presence of other family members, including wife Amarjeet Kaur, daughters Manjeeta Kaur, Karamjit Kaur and Gurpreet Kaur and other family members.
A large crowd comprising villagers and other prominent people including several MLA's, former ministers, leaders from all political parties also attended the funeral.
While speaking to the media persons, Sharanjit Singh Dhillon said that Gurcharan Singh Galib was one of the tallest pillars of modern times and a great leader. "Very few men can match his charisma, determination and his courage to speak his mind on issues concerning the people whom he loved and represented," said Dhillon.
Prominent among those present during the cremation included MLA';s S R Kler, Prem Mittal, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Mahesh Inder Singh Nihalsinghwala, Punjab Subordinate Services Board chairman Santa Singh Umedpuri, former ministers Jagdish Singh Garcha and Malkit Singh Dakha, former MLA';s Harish Rai Dhanda, Ranjit Singh Talwandi, Bhag Singh Mallah and Harmohinder Singh Pardhan, MLA Calgary (Canada) Darshan Singh Kang, Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill, SGPC member Bhai Gurcharan Singh Grewal, Ludhiana DC Rajat Aggarwal, SDM (Jagraon) Apneet Kaur Rayat, DSP Pirthipal Singh Batala, Harvir Singh Ayali, Anand Sarup Singh Mohi, Director of DAV Institutions Dr Satish Sharma, besides people from all walks of life.
