Dr S.K. Dash, Prof. and Head, Department of Agricultural Processing and Food Engineering, Orissa University of Agricultural and Technology, Bhubaneswar being given memento at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana on Wednesday.

 

Ludhiana, June 10, 2015: "Packaging plays a vital role in extending the shelf life of food products and waste reduction," observed Dr S.K. Dash, Prof. and Head, Department of Agricultural Processing and Food Engineering, Orissa University of Agricultural and Technology, Bhubaneswar, while delivering his talk at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. Dr Dash spoke on the topic “Smart and Active Packaging in Food Industry.” The talk was organized under the aegis of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), Ludhiana Chapter. Besides, Prof. M.S. Chinnan and Ms Lata Mahajan Chinnan Endowment also facilitated the programme. On the occasion, Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU and Convener of NAAS, Ludhiana Chapter was the Chairman of the session. Dr A.S. Nanda, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU also graced the occasion with his presence. Besides, senior officials, heads and faculty of PAU attended the talk.
 
Dr Dash said smart packaging retains integrity, enhances product attributes, confirms product authenticity, prevents food spoilage and responds actively to changes in product or package environment. He further said active packaging changes the condition of packed food to extend the shelf life or improve safety or sensory properties while maintaining the quality. Dr Dash also explained the working of active packaging system. Referring to intelligent packaging, he said this packaging gives ripeness and safety quality indications. Dr Dash called for conducting research on the development of intelligent tags for indicating quality of stored food, development of packaging films/rigid packages with active packaging ingredients, and studying the effects of active packaging on the microbial ecology and safety of foods. Apart from this, he dwelt on antimicrobial packaging, temperature control packaging, RFID systems for packaged foods, marketing of smart packaged foods, food safety, consumer acceptability and regulatory issues.
 
Dr Dhillon appreciated the informative talk of Dr Dash and the simple packaging technologies explained by him. Such interactions are very important for knowledge enhancement, he added. Food processing sector is growing very fast and packaging procedure is also advanced, he remarked, while highlighting the significance of food safety. Dr Dhillon stressed on focusing on processing of agri-produce and invited lectures from PAU experts of processing and food engineering, and microbiology in this direction.
 
Dr Nanda acknowledged the enlightening talk of Dr Dash and laid thrust on packaging procedure.
 
Earlier, Dr Ashok Kumar, Additional Director of Research (Food Science, Nutrition and Engineering), gave a brief introduction of the speaker.
 
Dr S.S. Kang, Professor of Plant Pathology welcomed the dignitaries and the participants.
 
Later, Dr Dhillon and Dr Nanda presented a memento to Dr Dash.
