CT Group of Institutions, Jalandhar organising workshop on Basics of Newspaper Designing.

Jalandhar, January 22, 2016: In order to introduce students to the designing and layout newspaper and provide a foundation, CT Group of Institutions organized two days workshop on ‘Basics of Newspaper Designing’ at its department of Journalism and Mass Communication. The workshop concluded on Thursday which was organized under the supervision of CT Institute of Higher Studies (CTIHS). The students of Journalism and Architecture attended the workshop.
On the first day of the workshop, Mr. Lekhraj (Head, City Desk, Dainik Jagran) shared his experiences of professional field. He guided the students on technical front as well by informing them about varied of important techniques and tools. He introduced students with the responsibilities as Desk or assignment editors monitor the status of news teams and coordinate the coverage of multiple stories at once, which requires organization and management skills. As the publication or broadcast deadline nears, desk editors at print outlets edit and review completed work, check for accuracy, select photographs, and correct errors. They may make decisions regarding the final layout or content of the publication or broadcast, adding or dropping material as needed. He said, “Now because of the technological development reporters write their news on computers which doesn’t too much for editing or pasting on the page.”
While on the second day, it was Mr. Raman Kumar Meer (News Editor, Dainik Bhaskar) who shared practical aspects with the students. He said that an editor, also known as an assignment editor, manages and delegates the coverage of news items. Because of their involvement in providing the community with accurate and relevant news coverage, many desk editors have established contacts. “For that every person who is handling the Editor or Desk job must be efficient and knowledgeable enough to handle and manage any task or any type of story editing at the time of need,” said Mr. Meer. He guided the students about Quark Xpress software used to design the pages of the newspapers while for the photo editing Photoshop is used.
The students were also taken to Dainik Jagran’s press at focal Point for visit where they explored the practical aspects of the workshop more visibly.
S. Charanjit Singh Channi (Chairman, CT Group of Institutions) said the aim of the workshop was to give the students practical knowledge about newspaper designing as it is a part of their curriculum too. The emphasis is on developing their designing skills as well in equation to reporting and writing skills. Students also learn the techniques and tools available to them, and understand the ethical issues involved in professional journalism.
