Ludhiana, January 16, 2015: Punjab Irrigation Minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon today said that for promoting sports culture in the state, the Punjab government would be providing government jobs to all players who excel in sports on international level. Dhillon said that SAD-BJP government was working on an aggressive campaign to produce maximum number of trained sportspersons and to have more Punjabi players in the Indian contingent for Rio Olympics 2016.
Sharanjit Singh Dhillon said this while inaugurating sports tournament at Jarkhar village, near here today evening. He said that sports tournaments in different villages of the state are helping our youth to stay away from the menace of drugs. He said that the state government is committed on promoting sports and sports tournaments in our villages.
While addressing the sportspersons, Dhillon said that Kabaddi sport is being promoted by the Punjab government by organising five Kabaddi World Cups. He said that its Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal';s dream that one day Kabaddi would become part of Olympics.
He said that for promoting sportspersons from grass root level and developing Punjab as the Nursery of Sports in India, the Punjab Institute of Sports would come up in the state. He said that at the Punjab Institute of Sports, the sportspersons would be trained in all 11 affiliated sports.
He also informed that all 146 block of Punjab will have sports centres  that would be ultra modern and state-of-the-art sports, where training would be provided to sportspersons from Punjab.
He said that land for the setting up of these sports centres have also been earmarked in 20 blocks where construction would start from next month onwards. The work in remaining blocks is also in the pipeline, the irrigation minister said, while adding that each sports centre would be set up with a cost of Rs 1.60 crore and it would have all kinds of ultra modern sports facilities.
Prominent among those present on the occasion included Gill MLA Darshan Singh Shivalik, former MLA Ranjit Singh Talwandi, Narinderpal Singh Ruby, Jagroop Singh Jarkhar, besides several others.
