Ludhiana, August 29, 2018: Department of Pediatrics, DMCH recently organized two-days ‘Advanced life support course’ under the aegis of Indian Academy of Pediatrics(IAP). In the course, doctors were trained in assessing and managing critically ill children when brought to emergency. This intensive course was conducted by delivering various lectures, hands on training, work stations to make them expert in assessing and managing critically ill or injured children in the emergency and improving the outcome by providing high quality care. There was post course test also for participants who cleared the test

During this course, there was inspection by a high-powered team of IAP officials including head of PICU, PGI Dr Jayashree, other members included EB member IAP, President LAP, secretary IAP and Vice President IAP. After their appraisal, DMCH has been accredited as IAP-ALS center. For this, hospital has got all the manikins, various equipment to train the specialists in managing critically ill children and management is further planning to expand the training center.

During inauguration Mr Prem Gupta, secretary managing society DMCH, assured to provide training to all doctors and paramedical personnel in these courses. Dr Sandeep Puri (Principal), Dr Sandeep Sharma (Medical suptd)and the faculty of dept of pediatrics were also present during inauguration. Dr Puneet A Pooni, prof and HOD was the course director and Dr Deepak Bhat was the course coordinator. Outside Faculty comprised of specialists from PGI, SPS hospital and CMC, Ludhiana. As per Dr Puneet, it is a matter of great pride and honor for DMCH to be recognized as a CPR and ALS center andnow it can organize these courses all over the region, and she was thankful to the management for providing the infrastructure for holding this prestigious course.

The college is credited as IAP-CPR center by Indian Academy of Pediatricians (IAP) observers and other IAP officials. DMCH is the first hospital in the state to have been given this accreditation after PGIMER Chandigarh and was also the first hospital in the region to have started 10 bedded Pediatrics ICU.

Basic life support, is need of the hour and not only doctors but also laypersons need to be trained in recognizing sudden cardiac arrest (sudden death) and be able to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before the ambulance arrives. If effective CPR is not provided within first few minutes of sudden death, survival even after advanced care at the hospital is dismissal and even if patient survives, brain damage may be there. Providing high quality CPR can be taught to any person.
