Jo Waada Kiya Woh Nibhana Padega….!!

This soulful rendition is just one of the most memorable songs that the evergreen duo of Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar mesmerized the audience with. And much like the lyrics of the song, both the icons actually kept their promise of entertaining the audience even when they chose to go different ways professionally. Yes, you heard that right. Stand witness to this lesser known story on Zee Classic which proudly celebrates Mohammad Rafi’s 92nd birth anniversary with a special feature, ‘Daastan-E –Rafi’ on 24th December, 2016 at 10AM.

The documentary chronicles the extraordinary journey of an ordinary man that Mohammad Rafi was. With the who’s who of Hindi Cinema sharing their experiences with the thespian singer, Daastan E Rafi gives us an inroad to things about him the world doesn’t know of. Amongst many other interesting incidents, this feature sheds light on the infamous rift between Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar that grabbed the maximum headlines in the 60’s.

Musicians started taking sides, duets were changed to solo numbers and several attempts were made to pacify both

As shared by Sanjeev Kohli, elder son of music composer Madan Mohan, Lata Mangeshkar crusaded a movement for royalty for singers in 1963. Since playback singers were instrumental behind the eventual success of a song, she stood for singers getting a fraction of the royalty. But Mohammad Rafi chose to differ. He stood with the initial payment system as he didn’t want to oscillate in the uncertain future of a song. This conflict of interest led them to stop working together and the music fraternity shook up. Musicians started taking sides, duets were changed to solo numbers and several attempts were made to pacify both.

After a dignified silence of 4 years, in 1967 a major surprise hit the industry. In a tribute concert to SD Burman, Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi resolved all their differences and came together for the first time after the split. Their performance opened to thunderous applause from the audience. And the rest as they say was history. Numerous such compositions followed and the duo went onto become one of the most successful ones in Hindi Cinema.
