Chandigarh, August 6, 2014: The Punjab Government has instructed the PWD department to accelerate the construction of 4 modern jails so as to unburden the load of already jam-packed jails in the state. Officers have also been instructed to assess the ground realities and explore the feasibility of the construction of new jails in the younger districts of Punjab.
This was disclosed by Sohan Singh Thandal, Jail Minister, Punjab, while presiding over a high level meeting of the Jail department here today. He said that although the construction of the four modern jails, which was being built in Amritsar, Bathinda, Sri Mukatsar Sahib and Sri Goindwal Sahib was on full swing but the PWD department has been asked to accelerate the construction work. He said that PWD department has assured that the construction of these jails would be completed within the stipulated time period.
Thandal directed the officer to make provisions for the installation of Solar Plants in these new modern Jails. He said that the use of solar energy for cooking food, water heating and for electricity would minimize the expenditure incurred on LPG and electricity bills. He asked the Principal Secretary to coordinate with PEDA and prepare a blue print so that solar plants could be installed in other jails of the state.  
Jail Minister also reviewed the progress of construction of new barracks in several jails of the state. He asked the officers concerned to put the construction work on fast mode so that inmates could be migrated to these barracks.
Promient among others who were present in the meeting included Sanjay Kumar, Principal Secretary, Jails, R.P.Meena, ADGP (Jails), R.P.Singh, ADGP cum MD, PHC, Jagjit Singh, IG (Jails) and Chief Engineer of PWD.
