Chandigarh, March 7, 2013: The massive police presence and its alertness has thwarted the plans of blocking road traffic at various places in Punjab of BKU (Ugrahan) and other supporting farmer and labour organisations, who had given a call for agitation on March 7 to lodge their protest against the arrest of their workers on March 6.

Disclosing this here today, an official spokesman said that they tried to block road traffic at Village Benra (Dhuri- Sangrur Road) District Sangrur, Lehra Bridge (Lehra- Sunam Road) District Sangrur, Dhaula (Barnala- Mansa Road) District Baranala, Moga Bypass (Moga- Barnala Road) District Moga, Village Jhethuke (Rampura- Barnala Road) District Bathinda, Khela  Bus Stand District Sangrur. However, with immediate intervention of police their efforts to lay any blockade were thwarted and 389 maleand 27 female activists of above mentioned organisations were taken into custody.
Twenty-seven female activists who had been taken into custody were later dropped at their villages escorted by the lady police.

The spokesman informed that criminal cases under relevant “Provisions of IPC and National Highway Act 1956” were registered against them.

Prominent leaders taken into custody were Joginder Singh Ugrahan (State President BKU Ugrahan), Mahant Dass, (Block President, Dhuri BKU Ugrahan), Kuldeep Singh (Block President Machhiwara BKU Ugrahan), Gurdev Singh, (Zone President PSC Piddi Group), Hira Singh Chak Sikander (District President BKU Ugrahan) Shamsher Singh Khokar (Block President Gurdaspur PSC Piddi Group), Com. Darshan Singh Kuhli (District President Ludhaina BKU Ugrahan).

He further said that no incident of violence of any kind occurred in the state on account of these protests and traffic plied normally throughout the state.

During the course of investigation of the case registered in connection with the death of ASI Kulbir Singh, Tarn-Taran Police has so far arrested four accused namely Salwinder Singh, Mukhtiyar Singh, Karnail Singh and Jassa Singh. It is retreated that at village Jeowala in District Tarn-Taran, where ASI Kulbir Singh had gone for raid, no violence and untoward incident had taken place.
