Ludhiana, February 22, 2017: Alliance of Doctors for Ethical Healthcare (ADEH) has welcomed the move of the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) to cap the prices of 14 more medical devices. To bring down cost of medicines is an important part to cut down out of pocket expenditure on health by our people. Medicines and consumables form 67% of total cost of treatment. Their prices must be brought down to bring down corruption in medical practice said Dr G S Grewal, former president of Punjab Medical Council (PMC) and member of core committee of ADEH. Elaborating the issue Dr Arun Mitra, former chairman ethical committee PMC and Sr. Vice President of the Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) said that there are lot of anomalies in the drug pricing MRP mentioned on the generic drugs, which are actually meant to be cheap is much different from actual price that the retailers get profit up to 1000%some times. Same is true for the appliances and implants like the knee joint implants, intraocular lenses etc. We have written about it to the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers requesting for streamlining of these prices.
