Chandigarh November 29, 2016: The Department of Chemistry, Panjab University (PU), today organized a rename ceremony of the departmental instrumentation lab to “Pran Nath Vohra Instrumentation Laboratory of the Chemistry Department” as a tribute to the distinguished alumnus of the department, late Dr.Pran Nath Vohra (1919-2004). This was followed by 1st Pran
Nath Vohra Oration &award ceremony of Smt.Prem Lata and Prof.D.V.S.Jain Research Foundation Award (2015) (JRFA). Along with alumni of the Department, Vice chancellor (Chief Guest), Mr.S.S.Bains, IAS Panjab Cadre (Guest of honour) and Prof. Praveen Rishi (Dean Science faculty) were present at the event. Dr. Vohra had donated an amount of 1,35,000 US dollars to the Panjab University through the Pran Nath Vohra Trust (PNVT) for the development of the Chemistry department. 1st PNV Oration was delivered by professor emeritus &INSA Honorary scientist, Prof. DVS Jain on ‘Enhancing bioavailability of drugs’.
The second highlight of the event was the best Researcher Award and Best Publication Promotion Award given by JRFA for the year 2015. The Jain Research Foundation has come into existence this year with Rs. 50 lakhs endowment fund donated by Prof.Jain’s family. Dr. Navneet Kaur, Associate Professor, Department of chemistry, PU, received acitation and award amount of Rs. 30,000 as the Best Researcher Award (2015). The two best Publication Promotion Awards among scientists from Science, Engineering, Pharmaceutical, Medical and Dental Science faculties of PU, for year 2015, were conferred to Dr. G.R. Chaudhary Associate Professor, and Dr. Savita Chaudhary Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, PU, which carries a citation and prize money of Rs. 5,000 each, for their research articles in high impact
journals.
PU Vice Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover expressed gratitude and appreciation towards the generous contribution of Dr. P N Vohra and Prof. D. V. S. Jain. Prof.Grover believes that such endowment funds will really support and accelerate the
departmental research activities in multifaceted ways. Prof. Venugopalan, Chairman of the department, shared the constant efforts made by him to make these endowment funds operational. Dr. G.R. Chaudhary and Dr Rohit Kumar Sharma, Convenors of PNVT and JRFA, respectively, presented the detailed guidelines and utilization of these funds.
