Chandigarh, May 23, 2015: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh has decided to adopt five villages of Chandigarh UT for transforming them as Adarsh Villages under the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”. PU has adopted Khuda Lahora, Dhanas, Dadu Majra, Khuda Ali Sher and Sarangpur under the scheme.

The information was given by PU Vice Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover while addressing the monthly Chairperson Meeting at PU Senate Hall on Friday. He asked the department’s chairpersons to contribute for the success of the initiative.

In an office order issued by the University, PU Registrar Col. G.S. Chadha (Retd.) has directed that the work should not only involve the cleanliness of the villages but the PU teams should also examine the aspects of solutions for Solid and Liquid Waste Management, waste disposal especially of cow dung and food waste. They could also examine the issue of grey water which emerges from the houses and its disposal either to the close village pond or soakpit for the purpose. In short, the villages should be transformed to become “Adarsh Village” and act as demonstration project for the other nearby villages, the order added.

Prof Seema Kapoor of University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology would act as the Coordinator and Dr Gaurav Gour Centre for Social Work would be the Co-Coordinator for the implementation of the project. / (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
