VAJRA CORPS CELEBRATES 71ST INFANTRY DAY
Jalandhar, October 27, 2018: Vajra Corps celebrated the 71st Infantry Day with traditional solemnity and gaiety on 27 Oct 2018. Lt General Dushyant Singh, General Officer Commanding 11 Corps, laid wreath at `Vajra Shaurya Sthal’ in Jalandhar and paid homage to the fallen heroes. Apart from the serving officers of the station, all Infantry veterans of Jalandhar were also present on the occasion. October 27 is celebrated as Infantry Day by the Indian Army as it was on this day in 1947 that an Infantry Company of the First Battalion of The Sikh Regiment was airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar to liberate Kashmir from the invading tribals who were supported by Pakistan Army. It was also first time that India as a Independent nation was engaged in operations against an aggression. The swift move of Indian army ensured that Jammu & Kashmir remains an integral part of India by preventing capture of Srinagar which would have resulted in merger of the the Jammu & Kashmir state with Pakistan. This action was ordered by then Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru after Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession acceding Jammu & Kashmir to India.
