Ludhiana, November 2, 2018: Disposal of industrial and agricultural waste in a sustainable manner is a herculean task before the engineers/technocrats. To address the issue a two day International Conference on “Sustainable Waste Management through Design” is being organized by Department of Civil Engineering, Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana. Dr. K S Gill, Professor & Head, Civil Engineering Department, GNDEC, in his introductory speech highlighted the relevance of this conference quoting the current stubble burning problem in this part of north India. He also emphasized the multidisciplinary role of engineers to find a viable solution for the utilisation of various types of wastes. Dr. Sehijpal Singh, Principal, GNDEC, said that joint research aiming sustainability is the need of an hour. He congratulated Civil Engineering Department, GNDEC for bringing a much needed topic of concern in the form of this two day International Conference. He further highlighted that this event will enable different researchers and practitioners to exchange their experience and share best practices for sustainable development. Chief Guest of the inaugural function Dr. G L S Babu, President, Indian Geotechnical Society, released the conference proceedings published by Springer an International publisher. Renowned experts who delivered their key note lectures during the inaugural session include, Er. M I S Saini, Founder, Indus Consultrans Pvt Ltd., Dr. G L S Babu, President, Indian Geotechnical Society, Dr. J N Jha, Principal, MIT Muzzafarpur, Dr.Kaushik Bandyopadhyay from Jadhavpur University, Dr. Raj Calay from Norway and Dr. S S Malik from Pune. Organizing Secretary, Dr. Jagbir Singh, welcoming all delegates outlined that the conference aims to provide a unique opportunity to highlight recent advances, new directions, and opportunities for sustainable and resilient approaches to design and protect infrastructure and the environment.
