Hyderabad, October 8, 2016: The Telangana, Osmania, Gandhi, Kakatiya Medical Alumni Association (TOGKMA) which meets once in a year, met this year at Chicago in USA recently. About 300 Alumni met and decided that the Association is on an ambitious project of equipping all 108 ambulances in Telangana with Automated External Defibrillators informed Dr. Suresh Reddy, President of Telangana, Osmania, Gandhi, Kakatiya Medical Alumni Association(TOGKMAA).

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, Dr. Suresh Reddy informed.

Dr. Suresh Reddy who was in city on a brief visit said Each of these AEDs cost US $ 2000/- and cheaper versions are also available. We are looking to work in tandem with the State Minsitry of Health in implementing this project, he added.

We have already met Dr. C. Laxma Reddy, Minister for Health, MP Dr. B. Narshaiah in this regard informed Dr. Hanmanth Bejjanki, Srivasa Chebrolu and Dr., Sujeeth Punnam who are also actively involved in this projects.

The mean age of SCD (Sudden Cardiac Death) is significantly is lower (60years) in India as compared to studies in the United States and Europe(75years). About 50 per cent of reported Heart Attacks(MI) occurs in Indian men under the age of 50years, with 25% under the age of 40 years. An estimated 9.2 million productive years of life were lost to cardiovascular disease in India in the year 2000, a number that is expected to increase to nearly 18 million by 2030 (10 times the rate in the US), Dr. Suresh Reddy added.

Our objective is to motive each and every alumni member to come forward to donate one each for their village or district. Also it is decided that each of our members adopt their villages/district and help it develop in providing improved health care services.

Near 10,000 telugu doctors are settled in USA. If each of these doctors come forward to help their village and District, the quality of life and medical treatment of the people will be drastically improved said Dr. Suresh Reddy

This year marked 31 years of our alumni, which is an historic movement in our alumni journey, he added

Speaking further he added that our members have earned both national and international recognition in their fields.

We want our alumni to facilitate and enable our Physicians to excel in patient care. It is decided to pursue teaching and research as well.

There are currently little over one lakh doctors of Indian origin in the United States of America and they account for 10% of all doctors in the USA and 40% of all International Medical Graduates employed in the US workforce. It is noteworthy that India provides the largest number of International Medical Graduates to the US in absolute numbers. Every six patient in America is seen by an Indian Doctor informed Dr. Suresh Reddy.

We want to bring our expertise and held our motherland, he informed.
