Amritsar, June 4, 2015: A "Short Term Course on Academic Administration (Principals and Heads)" was inaugurated here today at the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre of the Guru Nanak Dev University. As many as 38 Principals and Heads of Teaching Departments of the University are participating.

Prof. A.S. Brar, Vice-Chancellor and Dr. Sudhanshu Bhushan, National University of Educational Planning and Administration, New Delhi graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour respectively.

Prof. Brar in his inaugural address highlighted the onerous responsibility of the Principals as well as HODs for the smooth functioning of any institute of higher education. Expressing his grave concern over the non-inclusion of any Indian University amongst the top 200 of the world, he urged the academic administrators to introspect and to do the needful in this regard. After the distressing performance of the Govt. schools in comparison with the public schools, soon it is going to be the turn of the state Universities to lag behind in comparison with their private counterparts, he further remarked.

Holding the policy of not detaining the students upto Middle standard responsible to a great extent for the dismal performance of the Govt. schools, he emphasized on revising this policy as soon as possible. Asking the teaching community to utilize the modern innovative, creative, inquisitive modes of teaching, he emphasized that it was the dire need of the hour in order to bring our institutes of higher education on par with that of the advanced countries of the world. Our country is losing millions of rupees every year in the form of tuition fee being paid by our brilliant students to the overseas universities, which can be saved by providing the opportunities for world class education here only, he concluded. Dr. Bhushan also presented his views on this occasion.

Prof. Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Director in her welcome address expressed the hope that this Meet would deliberate on the various issues pertaining to higher education in India. Earlier the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour were accorded a floral welcome by Prof. (Mrs.) Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Prof. Paramjit Singh and Dr. Mohan Kumar. In the end Prof. Paramjit Singh, Dean, Academic Affairs and Coordinator of the Course proposed the formal vote of thanks. / (SK Vyas, jalandhar)
