Sensitization Programme held on Bio-medical Waste project

Ludhiana, February 20, 2018: A one-day sensitization programme was held in DMCH for District Administrators of Model District Ludhiana regarding effective disposal of Bio-medical waste.

To reduce and eliminate the release of highly toxic gases from the disposal of medical waste, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has developed project in five states of country including Punjab, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Orissa.

Under the project, 28 Model hospitals have been selected and Ludhiana is declared as the Model District Hospital for the state of Punjab.

The workshop was organized by official bearers of Punjab Pollution Control Board along with representatives of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and faculty members from MS Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore.

During the workshop, an active discussion was held among the participating delegates to frame proper guidelines for effective disposal of Bio-medical waste.

The workshop was presided by Sh Vishesh Sarangal (Additional Commissioner, Municipal Corporation) as the chief guest. Also present on the occasion were Sh Pradeep Gupta (CEE, Punjab Pollution Control Board), Dr Karmavir Goyal (Vice President, Indian Medical Association, Punjab), Secretary of DMCH Managing Society- Sh Prem Kumar Gupta and Dean Academics Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina, who is also Master Trainer for environmentally sound management of medical wastes in India.

Sh Pradeep Gupta welcomed the gathering and presented brief overview of the project.

The chief guest- Mr VisheshSarangal gave a call for Action to all participants mentioning that it is not one man’s job, but team work and all stake holders need to contribute to make Ludhiana District a model for the State.

Dr. Pruthish and Dr. Lalitha from MS Ramaiah Medical College, Banglore presented the technical aspects of the project and apprised that in addition to the literature for bio-medical waste management, all the model district hospitals will be given one day training on management of bio-medical waste.

After the inaugural session, technical session was held wherein the participating delegates were informed about the ill-effects of inadequate bio-medical waste management and the desired tools/mechanism required for proper disposal of the same.
