Amritsar, August 18, 2013: Heavy rains in the Northern India since the last week have been causing havoc in the entire region.

Ravi river known for its furious nature always overflows during such spells of heavy rains. This year again due to excessive rains various Dhussi bundh  on the banks of Ravi river are giving away. District administrations and flood control departments had raised alarms a few days back but last night in the agricultural fields in the area of Ajnala and Ramdas were inundated with the river water after eroding embankments at some places.

Special flood control teams under the command of deputy commissioner Amritsar Rajat Aggarwal, SP Rural, Senior Engineers and XENs of irrigation and drainage were already in the field surveying the flood prone area and reached the spot in the nick of the time and started strengthening the embankments and rescue operations with the help of Army personnel. DC Amritsar Rajat Aggarwal and his team even stayed at the ground zero throughout the night and carried on the operations.

Feeling the plight of the farmers and flood hit areas vice president PPCC and in-charge Majha Zone OP Soni alongwith the District President Amritsar Rural Harpartap Singh Ajnala visited the flood hit areas of Bal Labhe Darya, Kamirpur, Sahowal, Amb nasal, Ghonewala, Raji Sahan, Kamalpur and Shehzada- located close to Ajnala and Ramdas to inspect the rescue and barricade strengthening operations.

Soni praised the operations being carried out under the command of DC Amritsar and said that it is because of the promptness of the administration that the situation could be brought into control. DC Aggarwal briefed Soni about the troubles they are facing during the operation and also expressed satisfaction that locals also joined their teams which was a huge support. Soni praised that locals who have been arranging for food and accommodation for the flood victims.

Locals from the flood hit area met Soni and his team and requested for the help and relief from the center as well as state government as thousands of acres of crop has been damaged and a large number of farming equipments had to be abandoned as the water came flooding into the area due to breach in Dhussi.

Soni during his address to media said that they will demand from state and union government that the survey of the damaged crop be done as soon as possible and farmers must be paid minimum of Rs. 40,000 per acre. He also said that they will meet Partap Singh Bajwa, President, PPCC, and inform him about the situation and is sure to arrange more help for the flood hit area.

Farmers of the affected areas requested to Soni that more than 50 tractors are struck ahead of Dhussi and there is a dire need that the farming equipment may be saved, upon which Soni assured that it would be done on priority basis.

Soni appealed that not only district administration but the civilians must also join hands in the operations so that major damaged be averted.
