Chandigarh, May 23, 2016: In order to create large reservoir of highly qualified manpower in Bio-energy, the Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh and Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE), Kapurthala today signed a Memorandum of Understanding for joint research projects and the joint guidance of student projects.

PU Vice Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover signed the MoU on behalf of PU and Director General of SSS-NIBE, Prof Yogender Kumar Yadav signed on behalf of SSS-NIBE. Dean University Institutions Prof AK Bhandari, Chairperson UICET Prof Meenakshi Goyal, Secretary to PU VC Col PS Sandhu and many faculty members were also present on the occasion.

With this MoU, the two institutions would be able to club their efforts by pooling their expertise & resources and form a nucleus for promoting excellent quality manpower in the field of Renewable energy technology and Science with special emphasis on Bio-Energy. SSS-NIBE is an autonomous Institution of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India.

PU Vice Chancellor Prof Grover said that the PU teachers may be involved with the SSS-NIBE research journal as the members of the Editorial Board. As part of the follow up of the MoU, the Coordinator, Energy Research Centre, Prof Amrit Pal Toor would be visiting SSB-NIBE for academic collaboration and delivering the lecture.

As per the agreement, both the institutes would encourage interaction among the scientists, research fellows, faculty members and the students. They would prepare and submit joint research projects for funding agencies like MNRE, DST, CSIR, DBT,UGC, AICTE, etc. on mutually agreeable terms and conditions. The two institutions can give joint guidance to student projects/thesis in Bio-energy, Environment,Renewable Energy and other areas of National interest at PU by SSS-NIBE on mutually agreed terms. The students would be able to carry out their Ph.D. research work at SSS-NIBE and PU depending on facilities and requirements. In order to promote academic and research interaction in the areas of bio-energy, SSS-NIBE and PU would make provision to share their respective R&D and Lab facilities.

During the interaction, they also discussed various cooperation opportunities for collaborative research as well as mobility schemes. Further, with the collaborative research efforts of PU and SSS-NIBE would be helpful in solving the problem of burning of agricultural waste, municipal solid waste etc. by converting it into bio-energy and other value added products. This would also help in meeting rural energy needs of the people of the region collaborate for skill development programme.
