Ludhiana: The experts of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) have advised the farmers of the state not to transplant paddy before June 15. As per the experience of the University, paddy transplanting from June 15 results in good yield and less water usage whereas early sowing of paddy leads to increased use of water and attack of insects-pests.
Last year, Punjab’s record production of paddy at 180.0 lakh tonnes and a record contribution of 93.5 lakh tonnes of rice to the central pool is a testimony of University’s excellence in research. It was according to the experience of PAU that the Punjab Government fixed June 15 for transplantation of paddy under Punjab Preservation of Subsoil Water Act (2009). This Act aims at saving underground water, irrigation water and power resources. The experts have stressed upon the farmers to avoid early sowing of paddy.
