Chandigarh, July 26, 2016: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh would celebrate the World Hepatitis Day by organising Walkathon and Special Lecture on July 28.
PU Vice Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover and Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh Prof Yogesh Chawla would flag off the Walkathon at 8 AM from BGJ Institute of Health, PU on Thursday. The Walkathon would conclude at Department of Evening Studies Auditorium, Arts Block-I, where lecture and awareness campaign would be conducted from 9 AM to 10 AM.
Globally July 28 is celebrated as World Hepatitis Day. It is aimed to raise global awareness on hepatitis. World Hepatitis Day is one of the eight official global public health campaigns endorsed by World Health Organization (WHO).
To a large extent, Hepatitis B & C is an asymptomatic disease. Hence in majority of cases patients are diagnosed at a very late stage leading to poor treatment outcome. Also due to lack of awareness on disease transmission there is a risk of these patients spreading the disease to others though various means.
2016 is a pivotal year for viral hepatitis. WHO Member States are set to adopt the ambitious goal to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.
To mark this historic moment and to spread the awareness of the disease in community at large, we have organized a talk/walkathon on July 28, Thursday at PU Campus.
