Panamanian telecom to invest millions in national league

Panama City, July 4 (IANS) Panamanian telecom firm Cable Onda announced Thursday it will invest $6.3 million over the next four years to develop the Panamanian Football League (LPF).

According to Panama's RPC news network, Cable Onda General Manager Nicolas Gonzalez Revilla said the investment will be vital to improving the national league, stadiums and football clubs, with an eye on making it to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, reports Xinhua.

Panama, where football was played until very recently at amateur level, were close to qualifying for this year's World Cup in Brazil, as they lost to the US 3-2.

The sponsorship deal, signed with the Panamanian Football Federation (Feafut), will include initiatives to promote talented youth, he added.
