A view of the 46th National Conference of Nutrition Society of India ‘NSICON-14’ being formally inaugurated by Vice Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Science, Faridkot-Dr SS Gill at DMCH, Ludhiana on Friday.

Ludhiana, November 7, 2014: 46th National Conference of Nutrition Society of India ‘NSICON-14’ was formally inaugurated by Vice Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Science, Faridkot-Dr SS Gill. In his address, Dr SS Gill lauded the efforts of organising committee in organising the conference of national repute.  Those present on during the inaugural ceremony were members of DMCH Managing Society including Secretary Sh Prem Kumar Gupta, Medical Administrators and office bearers of Nutritional Society of India including its President Dr Anura V Kurpd and Vice President Dr B Sesikaran. Dr GS Grewal, President, Punjab Medical Council, was the Guest of Honour and released the souvenir on the occasion.  Charanjit Singh Atwal, Speaker, Punjab Legislative Assembly inaugurated the exhibition.    
Organising Secretary- Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina said that the conference will give the participating delegates an ample opportunity to learn several areas of Nutrition and their applications in the field of medicine, nursing, epidemiology, public health, biology, reproductive and child health, health economics, health informatics etc.
On behalf of Founder President Dr C Gopalan, Dr R Hemlatha (Joint Sercteray, NSI) said that  Nutrition, therefore, plays a central role in the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases, and you as nutritionists need to be at the front-line of this emerging battle.
In his presidential address, Dr Dr AV Kurpad said  greeted the audience present at the 46th Annual National Conference of the NSI.  We are fortunate in having a Society  that has a wide range of interests among its members, ranging from basic sciences to clinical nutrition to public health nutrition and policy.  This year, with a theme on Nutritional Approach for Combating Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in India, we have focused on the interface between public health nutrition, human nutrition and clinical nutrition, since this focuses on the promotion of good health and the prevention of chronic disease through nutrition. Over the decades, NSI has been able to do this admirably over the decades, through the enthusiasm and dynamism of you, the members.
The day today began with two scientific sessions including ‘Young Scientists’ Award Session’ and ‘Free Communications Session’. The chairpersons during the sessions were Dr B Sesikeran, Dr Kumud Khanna, Dr Jagmeet Madan, Dr Dinesh Gupta, Dr Suman Puri, Dr Anooja Thomas, Dr Navin Mittal and Dr Rajesh Mahajan
The highlight of the conference was debate on ‘Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) and Junk Foods-Is There a Relationship?’ Dr Anura V Kurpad from Bangalore introduced the subject of debate to the audience. Dr B. Sesikeran & Dr GM Subba Rao from Hyderabad spoke on ‘Is it Junk Food or Junk Eating’and ‘Regulation, Marketing and Advertising of Junk Food’ respectively. Dr. Sukhinder K. Cheema from Memorial University of New Foundland, Canada spoke on ‘Junk Food: A Western Perspective.’ Dr Michael S Kramer from University of Medicine, Canada delivered 38th Gopalan Oration on the topic ‘International Standards for birth weight-Does one size fit all?’ The day got concluded with symposium on ‘Nutritionn, Metabolism and NCDs’ and ‘Free Communication Sessions’
