Ludhiana, October 18, 2017: Mr.Gbadebo Ajibola Adeleke is a 57 year old gentleman from the Royal family in Nigeria. He is a well known international human rights lawyer and an avid social activist and Barrister of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He had developed severe compression of spinal cord in the neck and was unable towalk for 4 years. He had received treatment from several hospitals in Africa and Europe without much improvement. His treating Neurologist in Lagos, Nigeria, referred him to Prof Jeyaraj D Pandian, Head of Neurology at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana for further treatment. He was initially on consultation from Nigeria with Dr. Jeyaraj D Pandian and his team through internet and then he was flown in to New Delhi and then on to Ludhiana. He was wheelchair bound when he arrived and needed maximum support of his aide when he tried to stand and walk.

He was evaluated in detail at CMC, Ludhiana under the leadership of Dr. Jeyaraj D. Pandian, Dr. Sarvpreet Singh Grewal, Professor and Head of Neurosurgery, Dr Paul Sudhakar (Neurosurgeon), Dr Sobti (Neurosurgeon), Dr Mahesh Kate (Neurologist), Dr Vineeth Jaison (Neurologist), Dr. Santhosh Mathangi,Head ofPhysical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Mullai (PT), Professor of Physiotherapy and Dr. Shriram, Assistant Professor, Radiology and Dr. Kim Mammen, HOD urology department. The entire team reviewed his clinical condition and all the scansdone in CMC and Nigeria. After much deliberation and discussion with Barr. Gbadebo Adeleke on his current lifestyle, expectations and the risks involved it was decided not to perform surgery and instead to give him maximum benefit through intensive physical and occupational therapy under Dr. Santhosh Mathangi. Over the last three weeks Mr. Adeleke has made significant improvement and was able to walk after 4 years with minimal support and has regained his dignity and respect.

Dr Abraham G Thomas, Director, CMC Ludhiana stated that it is our privilege to be caring for Mr. Adeleke who will be discharged soon and his rehabilitation in Nigeria will continue under the supervision of doctors from CMC, Ludhiana in collaboration with Nigerian doctors in Lagos. He lauded the team effort by the various experts in the field of Neurological Sciences at CMC in his management.

Prof Jeyaraj D Pandian said that it is mandatory in difficult cases to bring together the best resources available and make a decision that is most beneficial and safe to the patient.
